Why Does MBBR Media Sometimes Float Unevenly?

Najnowsze wiadomości o Why Does MBBR Media Sometimes Float Unevenly?

Have you ever noticed that MBBR media does not always move evenly throughout the tank?

Some media may accumulate near the surface, while other areas appear to have less movement. In some cases, operators may even find that part of the media floats while the rest remains fully mixed.

Is this always a problem with the MBBR media itself?

Not necessarily.

Several factors can influence how MBBR carriers behave inside a reactor:

1. Media Density

The density of MBBR media is one of the most important factors.

Since most MBBR carriers are made from HDPE with a density slightly lower than water, they naturally tend to float. However, density can vary depending on raw materials, additives, and the manufacturing process.

Even small density differences may cause carriers to behave differently inside the tank.

2. Biofilm Growth

New MBBR media and mature media can behave very differently.

As biofilm develops on the surface, the overall weight and density of the carrier change. Uneven biofilm growth may therefore result in some media floating higher while others remain deeper in the reactor.

This is particularly common during the start-up period.

3. Aeration Distribution

Uneven aeration is another major reason for uneven media movement.

If the air diffusers are not evenly distributed, certain areas may have stronger mixing while other zones receive insufficient turbulence.

This can create:

• Media accumulation zones
• Surface floating areas
• Dead zones inside the reactor
• Uneven biofilm development

In many cases, the issue is related more to aeration design than to the media itself.

4. Air Flow Rate

Too little aeration may not provide enough mixing energy to keep the carriers moving properly.

On the other hand, excessively strong aeration can push media toward specific areas of the tank.

Finding the right balance between oxygen transfer and media mixing is essential for stable MBBR operation.

5. Tank Geometry and Media Filling Ratio

The shape of the reactor and the media filling ratio also influence carrier movement.

Corners, narrow sections, internal structures, and poorly positioned diffusers can all affect hydraulic circulation.

A properly designed MBBR system should ensure that the media remains freely moving throughout the effective reactor volume.

The Bottom Line

Uneven floating does not automatically mean the MBBR media is defective.

Before blaming the carrier, it is important to evaluate:

✔ Media density consistency
✔ Biofilm development
✔ Aeration layout
✔ Air flow rate
✔ Tank design and hydraulic conditions
✔ Media filling ratio

In a well-designed MBBR reactor, the goal is not necessarily for every piece of media to stay at exactly the same depth—but to maintain effective and continuous movement throughout the reactor.

Because in MBBR systems, good mixing means better contact between wastewater, oxygen, and biofilm.

And ultimately, that means better treatment performance.
