Have you ever looked inside an MBBR reactor and noticed that the media carriers are sticking together instead of moving freely?

It’s a common question in MBBR operation:

Is something wrong with the media?

Not necessarily.

There are several reasons why MBBR media may temporarily or partially stick together during operation.

1. Too much biofilm

As microorganisms grow on the carrier surface, the biofilm becomes thicker. If excessive biomass accumulates, neighboring carriers can become attached to each other.

This can be especially noticeable during the early stages of biofilm development or when sludge loading is high.

2. Insufficient mixing

MBBR media need continuous and relatively uniform movement.

If the aeration rate is too low, the reactor has dead zones, or the mixing system is not properly designed, carriers may accumulate in certain areas and form clusters.

3. Media filling ratio

A very high filling ratio can reduce the free movement space between carriers.

The goal is not simply to put in as much media as possible. The filling ratio should be compatible with the reactor configuration, mixing capacity, and treatment objective.

4. Media design and density

Carrier geometry, density, size, and internal structure can all influence how media move in water.

Two media carriers with similar nominal surface areas may behave quite differently under the same operating conditions.

5. Start-up conditions

During start-up, the biofilm is still developing and the movement pattern may not yet be stable. Temporary clustering can occur as biomass begins to accumulate.

So, when MBBR media stick together, don’t immediately assume that the carrier itself is the problem.

First check:

✔ Is the aeration or mixing sufficient?
✔ Is the media filling ratio appropriate?
✔ Is biofilm growth excessive?
✔ Are there dead zones in the reactor?
✔ Is the carrier suitable for the specific reactor design?

In MBBR, good performance depends on the interaction between media, biofilm, mixing, aeration, and reactor design.

The best carrier is not simply the one with the highest surface area.

It is the one that can maintain stable movement, support healthy biofilm growth, and work efficiently under real operating conditions.
